The Complete Guide to Moscato Wine

What is Moscato Wine?

Moscato is one of the world's oldest and most beloved wine styles — a naturally sweet wine made from the Muscat grape, one of the oldest known grape varieties in existence. The name Moscato comes from the Italian word for Muscat, and today it's used to describe a wide family of wines produced across Italy, South Africa, Australia, Spain and beyond.

What makes Moscato so distinctive is its naturally aromatic character. The Muscat grape produces wines bursting with floral notes, ripe stone fruits and a honeyed sweetness that very few other grape varieties can match. It's approachable, versatile and endlessly drinkable — which is why Moscato has become one of the fastest-growing wine styles in the UK.

At Moscato Life, we are the UK's only dedicated Moscato wine shop. Every bottle in our range has been carefully selected to showcase the best of what Moscato has to offer — from classic Italian Moscato d'Asti to vibrant South African sweet wines and everything in between.

Where Does Moscato Come From?

Moscato is made all over the world, but its spiritual home is the Piedmont region of northwest Italy — specifically the hillside town of Asti, which lends its name to the most famous style of all: Moscato d'Asti. This delicate, low-alcohol sparkling wine has been produced in Piedmont for centuries and remains the benchmark against which all other Moscato wines are measured.

Beyond Italy, Moscato is now produced in some of the world's most exciting wine regions:

Italy

Home of Moscato d'Asti and sparkling Moscato Rosé. Italian Moscato tends to be the most delicate and floral in style — light in alcohol, gently fizzy and beautifully sweet. Our Bartenura and Alasia ranges come from this tradition.

South Africa

South African winemakers have embraced Moscato with enthusiasm, producing fruit-forward sweet wines that are richer and more vibrant than their Italian counterparts. Our Jam Jar Sweet Moscato and Jam Jar Sweet Blush are perfect examples of this style.

Australia

Australian Moscato tends to be lively and fruit-driven, with a generous sweetness and fresh acidity. Patritti Pink Moscato from South Australia is a brilliant example — a family winery producing Moscato of exceptional quality.

Spain

Spanish Moscato is perhaps the most surprising and exciting style in our range. Tussock Jumper Moscato offers an exotic aromatic profile with notes of mandarin, lychee and jasmine that sets it apart from anything else we stock.

Moscato Wine Styles — Which is Right for You?

One of the wonderful things about Moscato is the variety of styles available. Here's a quick guide to help you choose:

Sparkling Moscato (Frizzante)

The most popular style — gently fizzy, light and refreshing. The bubbles lift the sweetness and make it incredibly easy to drink. Moscato d'Asti is the classic example. Perfect for celebrations, brunches and special occasions.

Sparkling Moscato Rosé

All the charm of sparkling Moscato but with a beautiful pink colour and added notes of red fruit — raspberry, strawberry and cherry. A brilliant choice for gifting or for anyone who loves rosé wine.

Moscato in a Can

A modern, convenient format that's perfect for picnics, festivals and on-the-go occasions. Our Bartenura can range delivers the same quality as the bottle in a practical 250ml format. Available in Original, Peach and Lychee varieties.

Semi-Sweet Moscato

Slightly less sweet than classic Moscato d'Asti, semi-sweet Moscato wines offer a little more balance and freshness. A great introduction for those who love flavourful wine but prefer something that isn't too rich.

How Sweet is Moscato Wine?

Moscato ranges from semi-sweet to intensely sweet depending on the style and producer. All of the wines in our range sit firmly in the sweet to semi-sweet category — there are no dry Moscato wines at Moscato Life.

To help you find your perfect level of sweetness, we've created our Moscato Sweetness Scale — a guide to every wine in our range ranked from sweetest to lightest, with tasting notes and scores.

How to Serve Moscato Wine

Getting the serving right makes a real difference to your Moscato experience. Here are our top tips:

• Serve well chilled — Moscato is best enjoyed at 6–8°C. Put it in the fridge for at least two hours before serving.

• Use a white wine glass — a standard white wine glass works perfectly. You don't need a special flute or wide bowl.

• Drink it fresh — Moscato is not a wine for ageing. Drink it within 1–2 years of the vintage and enjoy it at its most vibrant.

• Once opened, keep it in the fridge — sparkling Moscato will keep for 1–2 days with a stopper. Still Moscato will keep for 2–3 days.

Who is Moscato For?

The honest answer is: almost everyone. Moscato's natural sweetness and low alcohol make it one of the most approachable wine styles in the world. It's particularly loved by:

• Wine beginners who find dry wines too harsh or bitter

• Sweet wine lovers looking for something more interesting than basic supermarket options

• Anyone who enjoys flavourful, aromatic wines with personality

• People hosting mixed groups where not everyone drinks the same thing

• Anyone looking for a brilliant wine gift that's guaranteed to please
